Football Themed Weddings

As a wedding planner and celebrant, one of the things I love the most is a couple who really want to focus on making their wedding unique to them as a couple. I love a themed wedding as the possibilities to make it personal are endless. Just recently I got asked to plan a football themed wedding, which was right up my street.

So, if you're thinking of something similar, here's some things that you might want to consider.

The Venue

  • Most football clubs have facilities where you can hold your wedding, most clubs have incredible hospitality suites which can cater for numerous people.

  • So whether you want to hold it under the Wembley Arch with a pitch side ceremony or your favourite local team's ground, you should have the option to do that.

  • If you want to have the ceremony as well as the reception at the football ground, then you will need to check on whether the club holds a wedding licence.

  • If they don't have a licence, then don't worry, you can still have a celebrant led wedding there. You will need to fulfil the legal requirements at your local registry office, you can read more about that here, but that leaves you free to have a really personal at your chosen football club venue.

Colour Scheme

  • This is probably the easiest wedding choice to make if you're a football fan, you simply go with your team's colours.

  • How much you incorporate them is up to you, from simply having the room decorated in the colours to clothing, accessories and flowers.

  • If a Hand-fasting ceremony is something you want to include as part of your celebrations, then I've worked with couples who've had their ribbons in their favourite team's colours.

Clothing and Accessories

  • Just as with the colour scheme and decorating the room, you can go as far as you want with the football theme in your wedding outfits as you want to.

  • It might be a subtle nod with a tie in your teams colours, or maybe football themed cufflinks.

  • It might be your wedding dress or those of your bridesmaids are in the team's colours, or you could have a coloured sash on your dress or football themed jewellery.

  • If you really wanted to go for it, then you could wear the kit - it's your wedding, so if that's what you want to do, go for it!

Flowers

  • You could have your wedding bouquet or table decorations in your team's colours, or you could go for flowers in the shape of footballs, football boots, your team's logo.

  • Most florists can create anything and everything, so speak to them and see what they can come up with.

Wedding Stationery and Favours

  • From doing your invites in the style of tickets, to football puns, inviting guests to "the March of the Day", there are lots of really amazing things you can do.

  • You can name your tables after your favourite players or set your seating plan out like a tactics board, showing the formation of your guests.

  • For wedding favours, you could give football shaped chocolates, keyrings, bottle openers, magnets with your names, wedding date, club badge on.

Entertainment

  • There are lots of football songs that can be played by your wedding DJ to get everyone in the mood.

  • But you could also have football themed games to entertain your guests, a penalty shoot out, a "keepy uppy" competition with all guests entering their name on a score board and the overall winner getting a prize.

  • Spot the ball, guess the player competitions, all different ways to entertain guests of all ages.

Food and Drink

  • If you want to stick true to the footy theme, you could serve pie, peas and sausage rolls washed down with a cup of bovril, or you could opt for football themed cocktails named after your favourite players, grounds etc.

  • Your wedding cake could also be football themed, or you could opt for cupcakes with your club badge cake toppers on.

The possibilities for a football themed wedding are endless, so the above is not an exhaustiuve list by any menas.
