Once upon a time weddings took place on a Saturday, traditionally between May and September, but I think now, when it comes to weddings all bets are off and depending on what you want, you can pretty much get married when you want and where you want. Mid-week.... in an evening.... in the autumn and at Christmas. Christmas weddings are huge popular. This blog looks at how to plan a Christmas wedding.
For me, there is something really magical about a Christmas wedding (I've probably watched one too many Hallmark movies!), but there are a few things to take into consideration if you're deciding to hold festive nuptials.
Here are my top tips to planning a Christmas wedding.
1) Choose the right date.
The run up to Christmas can be incredibly busy for people, so if you do want to have a Christmas wedding make sure you give your guests plenty of notice - get those save the date cards out sooner rather than later!
Also include a list of places where guests travelling from further afield could stay, places get booked up a way in advance at Christmas, and you don't want guests declining your invitation because they can't find a hotel.
2) Times.
With daylight hours being shorted in the winter, it might be that you have your ceremony slightly earlier in the day than you would at another time of year, that way if you want photographs outside, there'll be plenty of daylight.
A good photographer will be able to give you advice on this.
3) Bad Weather Plan.
Ahhh the good old British weather, one minute we're basking in glorious sunshine, the next we are in wellington boots and a kagool!
Having a winter wedding, you could be blessed with a beautiful day of winter sunshine or snow-maggedon! It's a good idea to have a bad weather plan in place and maybe asks guests to arrive 20 minutes beforehand, as well as making sure that you and your partner have plenty of time to arrive at the venue too.
Think about having your big day in one venue, that cuts down on the travel needed.
4) The Venue
Looking at a venue in the summertime is very different to seeing it on a cold winters day, so make sure you visit your chosen venue in the winter and in the evening to see what it looks like.
Does it meet your expectations? Is it what you visualised?
What is the lighting at the venue like? What about the Christmas decorations?
What's the access to the venue like?
5) Clothing
I know this might seem an obvious thing to say, but a winter wedding will have an effect on the clothing you choose. It might be you opt for a long-sleeved dress, a cape, an overcoat, flat shoes as opposed to heels.
Layers are always good.
Plus it might be worth making sure your venue has somewhere that guests can check their coats.
Finally choose a celebrant that loves Christmas, OK, that's not strictly a proper tip, but I thought I'd mention it anyway and for the record, I LOVE CHRISTMAS!
Whenever or wherever you choose to have your wedding make sure that it's on occasion that fully reflects who you are as a couple and is everything you want.
