How to Plan an Autumn Wedding

Planning an autumn wedding can be magical, with vibrant foliage, crisp air, and cosy vibes.

Here’s my guide as to how to plan an atumn :wedding.

1. Choosing the Venue

  • Outdoor Venues: If you love fall foliage, consider outdoor venues like gardens, vineyards, or rustic barns. Be mindful of weather, and consider renting tents or having indoor spaces available.

  • Indoor Venues: Historic buildings, rustic barns, or cozy lodges offer warmth and charm for an autumn wedding. They also protect you from unpredictable weather.

2. Date & Time Considerations

  • Peak Foliage: Plan your wedding around the peak foliage time in your area, usually between late September and early November.

  • Weather: The weather can be unpredictable, so consider having heaters, blankets, or fire pits for guests if it’s chilly.

  • Earlier Ceremony Times: With daylight ending earlier in autumn, plan your ceremony around 3-4 p.m. so you can make the most of natural light.

3. Autumn Color Palette

  • Rich and warm colors like burgundy, burnt orange, deep red, mustard yellow, and forest green are perfect for fall. You can also balance these bold tones with neutral colors like cream, ivory, or champagne.

  • Incorporate metallic accents like gold, copper, or bronze for a touch of elegance.

4. Décor Inspiration

  • Natural Elements: Use autumn leaves, pumpkins, gourds, and rustic wood elements in your decor.

  • Candlelight: Add warmth and romance with candlelit lanterns or string lights.

  • Florals: Choose seasonal blooms like dahlias, sunflowers, marigolds, and chrysanthemums. Pair them with foliage such as eucalyptus, wheat, or berries.

5. Wedding Attire

  • Bridal Gown: Soft fabrics like lace, tulle, or satin are perfect for fall. Consider long sleeves or a chic shawl for warmth.

  • Bridesmaids: Rich autumn colors like wine red, forest green, or deep orange. Velvet dresses or heavier fabrics work well for the season.

  • Groomsmen: Darker suits in shades like navy, charcoal, or burgundy. Add fall-themed accessories like plaid ties or wool vests.

6. Food & Drink

  • Menu: Incorporate hearty, seasonal dishes like roasted vegetables, squash soup, or apple-glazed meats. Comfort foods like mac and cheese, pot pies, or mashed potatoes fit the cozy vibe.

  • Desserts: Think about adding a dessert bar with fall flavors—pumpkin spice, caramel apples, cinnamon pastries, or a pie station with apple, pecan, and pumpkin pies.

  • Signature Cocktails: Warm drinks like spiked cider, hot toddies, mulled wine, or bourbon-based cocktails fit the season.

7. Wedding Favors

  • Autumn-themed favors: Mini bottles of maple syrup, apple butter, candles with autumn scents, or personalised blankets make thoughtful gifts.

  • Edible favors: Think hot chocolate kits, mini pies, or caramel apple favors.

8. Entertainment

  • Consider fun seasonal activities like a bonfire, s’mores station, or even a hayride for guests.

  • Create a cosy lounge area with blankets, fire pits, and comfy seating for guests to relax between dancing.

9. Photography Tips

  • Capture the natural beauty of the season with outdoor shots during the "golden hour" for soft, warm lighting.

  • Include props like blankets, autumn leaves, or even a scenic woodland backdrop to enhance the autumn feel.

10. Stationery & Invitations

  • Use autumn-inspired motifs like leaves, pumpkins, and rustic elements. Opt for textured paper, warm tones, and elegant calligraphy to complement the seasonal theme.

11. Budget Tips

  • Seasonal Décor: Use nature to your advantage by incorporating leaves, pumpkins, and seasonal flowers, which may be less expensive than other floral arrangements.

  • Venue Selection: Fall is considered a "shoulder season" in many places, so venues may offer discounts compared to summer rates.

By focusing on warm, natural elements and thoughtful seasonal details, you can create a unique, cosy, and stunning autumn wedding experience!

The possibilities for an autumn themed wedding are endless, so the above is not an exhaustive list by any means. If you would like to chat to me either about planning your wedding or a celebrant-led service or to then please get in touch via my website or email katiethecelebrant@gmail.com
