Meet Katie the Celebrant

I got asked recently why I decided to be a celebrant and so I thought it might be worth writing a blog to introduce myself or re-introduce myself in some cases and give you the chance to meet Katie the Celebrant..

Meet Katie the Celebrant

My name is Katie Trinder and fourteen years ago I lost my mum, her death was very sudden and totally unexpected. Seven years ago, my dad died. He had a short battle with cancer. The celebrant that we used was amazing and I thought that it might be something I'd like to do, but it felt too soon.

A few years ago at my aunty's funeral, I got chatting to the celebrant there and it suddenly felt like the time was right for me. I did my funeral celebrant training and conducted my first funeral a few weeks later.

Some of my friends were baffled as to why I'd decided to do this and I think they still think it must be a depressing job. The truth is, (in my opinion) it is the best job in the world. It is a real honour and a privilege to be able to help families celebrate the life of their loved one and to say goodbye. It is not a responsibility I take lightly.

A few months after I trained as a funeral celebrant, I trained to do weddings and naming ceremonies. These are totally different, but again a real privilege to be a part of a really special occasion in a families life. Although I mainly conduct weddings in Nottinghamshire, I have travelled further afield when I've been asked and am more than happy to do so.

As well as working as a celebrant, I'm also a radio presenter and work for Mansfield 103.2. I've worked in radio for over 20 years, as a journalist, presenter and I've run radio stations too. I've worked for the BBC, BFBS, the Lincs FM group and Mansfield 103.2, where I still present at the weekends, Saturday 11-1pm and Sundays 9-1pm .

During my time in radio, I've presented shows from various locations, including football grounds, pubs, shopping centres and fairgrounds. I've even conducted a vow renewal live on air and I've organised concerts for people such as Adele, Olly Ours, the Saturdays and the Wanted.

I also got to combine both jobs by presenting a vow renewal on the radio for Yvette and Tony Price-Meer who had been together for 40 years. That was quite the experience and you can find out more about that here.

In my free time, I love films and the theatre, especially if it's a big musical with a medley at the end! I'm a huge Mansfield Town fan (Nigel Clough's barmy army), I love an adventure, going on holiday or just on a day trip with my sister.

I have seven dogs (yes seven), 3 cats and I've just written my first novel, "Stanley Thomas is a Very Bad Man", which is a crime thriller and book number 2 is a very slow working progress.

If you'd like to talk to me about my services, whether it's conducting a funeral service, memorial, wedding, vow renewal or baby naming ceremony, then please contact me, either via my website or by e-mailing katiethecelebrant@gmail.com
